Is Sushi Yoshikawa Ginza Worth It? An Honest Review

| Time to Read :

4–5 minutes

We first heard about Sushi Yoshikawa through its signature “Dragon Ball” roll, a futomaki filled with tuna, uni, and several egg yolks. After seeing it online a few times, we became curious: did it actually taste good, or was it mainly popular because of how it looked?

We decided to try the Ginza branch during our trip to Japan. The short answer is yes, we enjoyed it. Read more below to know what kind of omakase experience to expect at Sushi Yoshikawa Katsu Ginza Bettei.

What Is Sushi Yoshikawa Ginza’s Omakase Like?

If you are looking for a traditional Edomae sushi experience, Sushi Yoshikawa may not be exactly what you have in mind.

The meal still follows the usual omakase flow, with each dish prepared and served one at a time across the counter. However, the menu options and presentation feel more modern: ponzu, onion sauce, plum, matcha salt, caviar, and even mashed potato all appeared throughout our course.

The chef showed us some of the fresh ingredients before preparing them, which made the meal feel more interactive. He was friendly and entertaining, while the waitress chatted with us and helped us choose drinks to go with the meal.

There were only four guests at the counter that evening, including the two of us, so the whole experience felt almost private.

What Is Included in Sushi Yoshikawa Ginza’s Omakase?

Omakase menus can change depending on the season and what is available that day, but our course included:

  • Nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) with uni
  • Chutoro (medium-fatty tuna)
  • Red snapper with ponzu
  • Bonito with onion sauce
  • Snapper with mashed potato and plum sauce
  • Shrimp with lime and sea salt flakes
  • Abalone with abalone liver sauce
  • Suzuki (Japanese sea bass) with matcha salt
  • Aji (Japanese horse mackerel) topped with green onion
  • Chopped tuna with caviar
  • Tairagai (Japanese pen shell)
  • Soup
  • The signature Dragon Ball futomaki
  • Tomato refresher (palate cleanser)
  • Shrimp head
  • Eel dog (eel wrapped in dried seaweed, looked like a hot dog)
  • Amaebi
  • Marinated lean tuna
  • Either chutoro or otoro with topping (I can’t remember)
  • Dessert

There was a good mix of simple pieces and richer dishes with less traditional combinations. The seafood tasted fresh, while the sauces and toppings made each course feel different from the last.

I particularly love the variety and the uniqueness of each dish. They were all delicious.

What Is Sushi Yoshikawa’s Viral Dragon Ball Roll?

The Dragon Ball roll is Sushi Yoshikawa’s signature futomaki, filled with tuna, uni, and a row of egg yolks. The chef assembled it in front of us before rolling and slicing it at the counter, so we could watch the whole process.

It was rich and creamy, with the tuna, uni, and egg yolk complementing each other perfectly. It’s definitely a large piece of sushi. But more importantly, it tasted really good; it’s not just camera-friendly.

We thought it was genuinely good and worth trying at least once.

Do You Need to Arrive Early at Sushi Yoshikawa Ginza?

As a courtesy to the chef and the other guests, try to arrive a little early, or at least on time for your reservation.

Omakase is served as one coordinated course, so arriving late does not only affect your own meal.

The other two guests at our seating arrived after the course had started, which meant the chef had to go back and prepare the first two or three dishes again for them. We waited between courses while he caught everyone up.

The chef even asked the waitress to keep us company and chat with us while we waited, which was thoughtful of them. Still, it made us realize how much the timing of an omakase depends on everyone at the counter.

Arriving five to ten minutes early will make the evening smoother for everyone.

Is Sushi Yoshikawa Ginza Worth the Price?

Yes, with the right expectations.

I would recommend Sushi Yoshikawa Ginza if you want an omakase dinner that feels creative and relaxed. The ingredients were fresh, the chef and staff were friendly, and the course stayed interesting from beginning to end. Considering the number of dishes and the overall experience, the price felt reasonable for an omakase dinner in Ginza.

It could be a good option for a date night or for someone trying omakase for the first time who might find a more serious sushi counter intimidating.

If your priority is a very traditional Edomae experience, this may not be the restaurant I would recommend. But if you enjoy modern flavours, creative presentation, and a more relaxed atmosphere, Sushi Yoshikawa is worth considering.

We initially came because of the viral Dragon Ball roll, but the rest of the course made the dinner worth it for us.

How Can You Book Sushi Yoshikawa Ginza?

We booked our dinner from their official website. It was full in Japanese, but we used Google Translate. We paid for the full course in advance when making the reservation.
