Tokyo Omakase Worth Trying: Sushi Dan, Hiro-o

| Time to Read :

2โ€“3 minutes

Are you doing some rounds finding out the best omakase restaurant for your Japan itinerary prep? Are you getting frustrated because almost every omakase restaurant is super expensive & fancy? Look no further!

Let me take you on a culinary adventure to Sushi Dan in the charming neighborhood of Hiro-o, Tokyo, where I had the most unforgettable Omakase experience.

The Entrance ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

As I entered The Restaurant, which is the name of a fancy “food court” where Sushi Dan is located, I was warmly greeted by the vibrant yet intimate surrounding.

Sushi Dan is located at the corner of the room. There’s a nice sushi bar with only 10-ish seats, all located by the counter. I arrived half an hour early and tried my luck to get in earlier, but was unable to due to the limited seatings ๐Ÿ˜

But that’s okay! Hiro-o seems like a nice neighborhood and there’s quite a number of drugstores nearby for me to kill time.

Intimate Setting ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

Sushi Dan’s intimate setting enhances the overall experience for me. The cozy counter seating allows me to watch the chef at work and learning closely about the art of sushi making. One diner even had a chat with the chef and bought him a shot of sake. Watching that made my heart warm.

Head Chef Takehiro Arakawa was very attentive and fun. My dad thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience and took a photo with him haha.

The Sushi Creations ๐Ÿฃ

The heart of any Omakase experience is, of course, the food. So let’s talk about the food now!

I went for the Kuro Set Menu, in which we were served 12 nigiri and miso soup. Each piece of sushi was a masterpiece on its own, meticulously crafted and presented. The melt-in-your-mouth texture of the fish combined with the perfectly seasoned rice was nothing short of perfection. This set costs 5,800 yen per person, which I think is definitely worth it.

Now I need to apologize in advance because I don’t remember the exact names of these sushi pieces, but I do have photos of them.

SPOILER ALERT: Scroll down for the photos.

I savored a wide range of flavors and textures, from the delicate sweetness of uni (sea urchin) to the rich, fatty goodness of toro (fatty tuna). There’s also shrimp, surf clam, eel (anago), and a unique creation of the chef wrapped in seaweed– which was so gooood.

These were all authentic traditional nigiri with at most, a very simple twist, but absolutely 100% delicious.

It’s the definition of simple yet exquisite.

So that concludes my first omakase adventure and I’m glad to experience it in Japan.
