York, a historic city in the UK, is known for its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant cultural scene. York is a captivating destination any time of year. However, in November, York is particularly special indeed.
York’s mysterious charm is just somehow more vivid with autumn leaves on the street and gloomy weather, yet absolutely festive with their famous York Christmas Market.
So, what is there to do in York, UK in November?
- 1. Visit York Minster
- 2. Stroll Through The Shambles
- 3. Get a ghost
- 4. Explore York Christmas Market
- 5. Relax in a traditional tea room
- 6. Take a walk in the city centre
1. Visit York Minster

No trip to York is complete without a visit to York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. You’ll be in awe of the stunning gothic architecture and intricate stained-glass windows. There was a travelling pianist playing his piano when I was there, which further adds to the ๐majestic๐ ambiance. Would recommend 100%.
2. Stroll Through The Shambles

The Shambles is one of York’s most famous and picturesque streets, lined with charming buildings and independent shops. Take a stroll, snap some photos, and shop for unique gifts and souvenirs. In November, most shops are beautifully decked out for Christmas. It’s like you’re walking down Diagon Alley.
3. Get a ghost

Now that you’re in the most haunted city in the world, why not purchase a ghost to commemorate this York trip? York Ghost Merchants is a very charming and intriguing shop I’ve ever been to. I got curious at this shop as there was such an extremely long queue leading to the shop.
My brother and I ended up queueing the next morning for 2.5 hour, in which we almost missed our train back to London lol ๐ซ No regrets though, because we got these amazing and special ghosts made by the finest ghostmaker.
4. Explore York Christmas Market

York Christmas Market offers a wide variety of local culture and cuisine. Christmas Market in 2024 starts from 14th November – 22nd December. It’s one of the largest Christmas Market that I’ve ever visited. So many unique local shops to see and warm food & beverage to indulge in. A great way to spend your time while also supporting York’s local business ๐
5. Relax in a traditional tea room

Would absolutely recommend a visit to Betty’s Tea Room when in York. Warm up with a pot of tea (or two, you’re welcomed to try out another tea blend!) and enjoy a selection of scones, cakes, and sandwiches in a cozy setting.
Make sure to reserve your seat beforehand to avoid the long queue.
Hint: there’s a separate entrance for those who have made reservations in advance (I booked mine online). You’ll be guided to a room at the 2nd floor, where you’ll get to enjoy your teatime with piano playing at the background. It was such a pleasant experience.
6. Take a walk in the city centre

In November, shops in York are definitely ready for Christmas. This is one of my favorite activities in Yorkโ strolling around in the City Centre, looking at the hanging Christmas lights, and feeling the warmth of the festivities.

Most people also recommend visiting York City Walls. You will experience a scenic and historical walk around the city.
However, I spent only 1 night in York, so I was unable to visit the City Walls. Have any of you ever visited York City Walls? Would you recommend going? Or do you have any other ideas on what to do in York? Let me know in the comments below.
