Top 6 Desserts to Eat When in Japan

| Time to Read :

2–3 minutes

Who doesn’t enjoy a good Japanese dessert? Here I compiled the best desserts I had on my most recent trip to Japan.

Here goes the list, not ranked in any particular order because all of them were too good. Sweetness incoming! ☁️☺️

1. Cremia Ice Cream

I tried this out just because almost everyone I know posted Cremia during their visit to Japan. I have to say that I underestimated how milky and creamy an ice cream could get. This was hands down the most satisfying soft serve I’ve ever had 🍦.

2. Traditional Japanese Desserts

There’s this cute traditional dessert place called Bunnosuke Chaya Honten in Kyoto. Their desserts were so good and fascinating. We tried warabi mochi, dango, and a cup of warm matcha. The ambiance here was perfect too! 🌿

3. Matcha and Hojicha Desserts in Uji

I used to think that I had tasted the perfect matcha and hojicha before. And then I went to Uji. And it absolutely blew my mind.

Matcha and hojicha in Uji- I think were much more flavorful and creamy. I definitely had the best matcha in Uji at this cozy restaurant: Tsuen Main Branch.

p.s. wondering what else is there in Uji? Here’s my take on things to do in Uji.

4. Dango

I enjoyed eating these sweet chewy little spheres, but the one that stood out the most for me was the tea dango from Marukichi in Uji.

5. Kyo Yasaka Pudding

This is such a cute “modern-style” dessert in Kyoto. It’s just so interesting to find this type of dessert in the middle of Kyoto old town, such a beautiful contrast. Anyways! Their silky pudding was such a delight and I loved the little burst of boba.

6. Fruit Daifuku

I stumbled upon this gem when I was in Nara waiting for the pedestrian light to turn green. They were offering samples and of course I had to take one. And that one bite altered my brain chemistry 🥹

I got strawberry, mango, and kiwi daifuku– and they were all SO good, the perfect amount of sweetness and tanginess.
