it’s been exactly one year since you’ve moved back home for good. after 9 years away from home, you’re finally back home 🙂

did you remember how life was back then? from uni, graduation, work. and then one day, deciding to embark on yet another journey to pursue a higher education on yet another continent. how do you feel having roamed around 3 different continents in your life thus far? 🙂

did you remember the times when you had to work in remote places because of the nature of your job? when you had to walk beside the fast-moving vehicles on the highway, just to reach the bus stop after your 1st interview? or the train ride and endless walk to reach the factory for your 1st job at a multinational company during covid times?

did you remember the times during the pandemic? when you tinted your eyebrows and you ended up with swollen eyebrows bc you’re allergic to it (lol)? when you enjoyed buying bubble teas & cooking with your roommate? when you thought things would be just fine, amidst the whole pandemic situation?

did you remember how fast things could change in a few months? when your friends moved back home and you’re left alone? when you had to move into a new apartment all by yourself and you put those “i’ll never give up [ku tak akan menyerah]” and “keep on” songs on repeat to keep your spirit up? or when you started playing ukulele to fill the silence at your new place at the hopes to fill the void that is in your heart?

did you remember those gloomy days & sleepless nights? i know how bleak those times were in 2020-2022 for you. when you began to struggle with your purpose in life & finding the reason to keep staying in the city? when you drank away all of your sorrows and loneliness with expensive shots? when you danced all night long to keep yourself busy from overthinking? or when you mindlessly went on dates just to have some company?

did you remember the time when you finally became aware of how unkind you’d been to yourself? when you finally braved yourself to reach out for therapy? when you finally made the decision to go back home? when you packed up your first big box of stuffs to ship home? when you let out a huge satisfied sigh and cried after you taped up that first box? and when you finally told your family & colleagues that you’re leaving?

and did you remember how the burden in your heart just lifted instantly when you made the choice? how light & joyful your voice was when you told your mum about your resignation? and did you remember how wide your smile was when you took your last selfie at your apartment?

did you remember the golden-burgundy-purple sky on the day you’re leaving? the last minute errands under the pouring rain that you had to finish? and how giddy you felt when you called your landlord to return the key & finally hopped into your uber?

did you remember those roller coaster of emotions? those sadness, joy, anxiety, happiness, excitement, sorrows all at once…….. all happening one year ago today.

so this is your 1-year-after self, writing to say thank you. thank you for having the courage to make the call, thank you for being aware of your needs and wants, and thank you for finally being kind & prioritizing yourself.

i’m proud of you for being so vulnerable, yet brave enough to make the choice & committing to it. and despite everything that happened, you persevered and never gave up hope.

i’m glad to have you on this ride of life, let’s continue to embrace the present moment, and may we always be living fully.
