As Japan moves past Golden Week and the cherry blossoms begin to fade, mid-May offers a quieter yet equally charming experience.
Here are 5 reasons to visit Japan (more specifically Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Kawaguchiko) in May.
1. Clear Views of Mount Fuji

One of the great things about visiting Japan in May is the high chance to get a clear view of snow-capped Mount Fuji. With the sky often free of clouds, you can enjoy stunning, unobstructed views of Mount Fuji.
We spent 3 days in Kawaguchiko and we could get a clear view of Mount Fuji every single day, even from our hotel room. Click here to see the exact locations where I took photos with Mount Fuji.
2. Post-Golden Week Calm
Following Golden Week, the crowds tend to dissipate, although it’s still very much there haha. But overall it’s more relaxed and many restaurants are open, compared to when it’s Golden Week. It’s a great time to explore all those food and attractions ✨
3. Pleasant Weather

May typically brings mild temperatures and sunny days, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and sightseeing without the discomfort of extreme heat or cold. See here to see some outfit ideas I wore for May in Japan.
4. Flowers are in Bloom

There’s many options to see different kinds of flowers in May. You can see a pink sea of flowers at Fuji Shibazakura Festival near Kawaguchiko, or the cascading Wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park. I did not manage to see either of them, but I got to see beautiful blue flowers at Oishi Park, Kawaguchiko.
5. Ideal Weather for Onsen

With the weather warming up, May provides the perfect temperature for outdoor onsen, it’s not too cold or too hot to relax in a hot spring. We had an outdoor onsen during our stay in Kawaguchiko at Ooike Hotel. Click here for the full review of Ooike Hotel.
So there’s 5 reasons why Japan should be on your list for May travel destination ideas. What about you? What’s your travel destination go-to for May? Or do you have more reasons to add to the list above?
