Planning for a Hobart Travel in Autumn/Winter? Here’s What You Need to Know

| Time to Read :

3โ€“5 minutes

Autumn/Winter times in Tasmania, Australia can be interesting too! Maybe not the best season if you’re looking for lavenders, but there’s still plenty of things to do. Hobart is a quiet, peaceful city with amazing outdoors & fresh seafoods. I’m sure I’ll pay another visit one day. So here’s my list of things to do in Hobart and why I think it’s worth going to Hobart!

1. Eat Oysters

Honestly 90% of the reason why I’d like to come back. Tassie’s oysters are the ๐Ÿ’งFRESHEST๐Ÿ’ง I’ve ever had. I spent about 4 days and not a single day went by without a good shot of oyster. I’ve tasted oysters in Melbourne and Adelaide, but in my opinion, Tasmanian oysters are much ocean-y & they left a good clean/refreshing aftertaste (trying my best to put those ~sensations~ into words here ๐Ÿ™ƒ). Franklin Wharf area is one of the best places to find oysters.

2. Strolling Around Franklin Wharf

Franklin Wharf area is an outdoor space right by the sea. There’s heaps of interesting yachts and boats, interesting places to eat (oysters, ice creams, breads, etc). In the winter it’s just a nice area to take a stroll and experience some refreshing yet chilly wind from the South ๐ŸŒฌ

3. Visit Salamanca Market

If you’d like to get the most out of Hobart’s local experience, then Salamanca Market is a must visit. This market only opens on Saturdays and it’s v e r y busy. I get it though because there’s just so many interesting booths that I simply couldn’t resist buying ๐Ÿฅบ I mean, there’s even a stand selling all lavender-related stuffs!

4. Explore Port Arthur

Port Arthur Historical Site

Port Arthur is a historic site, it was a prison long time ago. It’s an eerily enchanting place where visitors were able to stroll and explore the site on their own (guided tours were also available). Tiny signboards containing stories of convicts were displayed on several locations, allowing visitors to be transported back into the past and left imagining how life in this area was back then.

5. Picnic by Richmond Bridge

Richmond Bridge, arch bridge in Tasmania

This was a pit stop for me on the way to Port Arthur from Salamanca Market. It’s a beautiful place to relax & breathe in the Tasmanian air, while devouring all the foods we bought at Salamanca Market ๐Ÿ˜Œ

6. Day Trip to Bruny Island

This right here was the ๐Ÿ’ซ highlight ๐Ÿ’ซ of the trip! I thought I already had the best oyster in Hobart, but Get Shucked was just on another level. I couldn’t even describe it but it was just insanely super fresh. A few more reasons why Bruny Island is a must visit is all those scenic drives around the island, breathtaking viewpoints, and little local shops selling local produces like cheese and honey.

7. View Hobart from Scenic Viewpoints

Rosny Hill Lookout is located very close to Hobart CBD. It was a short but a little bit hilly drive to reach the lookout. Beautiful place to see the sunset.
Mt. Wellington also has a scenic viewpoint, but I’ll explain it more on List #9.

8. Visit MONA

I’m actually not an “art gallery/art museum” kinda person. I was a bit hesitant to visit this place, because the entrance fee was also quite pricey. But before the trip started, I asked several friends who’ve been to Hobart, and literally every single person mentioned how I should definitely visit MONA. I gave in. And lmao I’ve never been so amazed wandering inside a museum. All the displays were incredibly fascinating. They even have a ‘poo machine’ which mimics the digestive system and produces poo ๐Ÿ’ฉ it was a fun experience here! And their architecture & outdoor area were also a work of art ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐ŸคŒ

9. Mt. Wellington and Lavender Field (optional)

Tbh visiting Mt. Wellington on a winter day when the clouds were surrounding the top of the mountain was not the best idea lol. At the lookout, we weren’t able to see the scenery because of the weather. In the end, we drove back down again, but were lucky enough to catch a quick glimpse of Hobart (2nd photo) before the clouds went back.
Another place that I half-recommend/half-not-really-recommend to visit during winter is lavender farm. We went to Port Arthur Lavender as it was along the way to Port Arthur. The lavenders haven’t bloomed yet so you can’t take photos with them. But the restaurant’s still open and you can grab some lavender drinks, snacks, and get some cute lavender souvenirs. It’s still a nice place to chill, relax, and enjoy the nature (3rd and 4th photos).

  1. Really great suggestions for Hobart. We missed most of this when we past through. Not that fond of oyster though!
