Lavender Farm near Lake Tekapo, NZ: 7 Things to Expect

| Time to Read :

3–5 minutes

If you’re doing a South Island road trip and stopping by Lake Tekapo or Mount Cook, there’s a lavender farm nearby that’s worth adding as a quick detour.

It’s calm and scenic. I think it could be a relaxing stop in between long drives!

We visited NZ Alpine Lavender in late January, and here’s what you can expect if you’re thinking of going too.

1. Where is the lavender farm?

The lavender farm most people visit around Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook area is New Zealand Alpine Lavender, located along the road toward Mt Cook from Lake Tekapo or Twizel.

So if you’re already in the area, it’s very easy to fit into your route without going out of your way. It works perfectly as a short stop during a road trip.

As for us, we went to the farm on our way back from Mt Cook.

2. What are their entrance fee & opening hours?

It’s free to enter the general area. You can eat, relax, grab some ice cream, and browse the souvenir shop without paying an entrance fee. However, it requires an additional fee of $8 to go inside the lavender fields.

These are their opening hours based on their website:

Farm open:
Nov 15, 2025 – Apr 6, 2026

Opening hours
Nov 15 – Dec 24 (10am to 5pm)
Dec 26 – Jan 30 (9am to 6pm)
Jan 31 – Feb 28 (10am to 5pm)
Mar 1 – Apr 6 (10am to 4pm)

Closed Christmas Day

3. Is January a good time to visit the lavender farm?

Yes, January is one of the best times to go.

When we visited in January, the lavender fields were fully in bloom. The weather was warm, occasionally cloudy, and comfortable enough to walk around.

In summer, I think it pairs really nicely with a Lake Tekapo stop, or even Mt Cook. You get the mountain walk, turquoise lake, and then the soft purple tones from lavender all in one day.

4. What you can expect at the lavender farm?

The farm is really pretty and peaceful.

You can bike along the field (def not between lavender rows tho! 😀), take photos with the mountains in the background, use the provided photo props for your pictures, eat lavender ice cream, drink lavender hot cocoa, or just take a slow stroll and enjoy the view.

My favorite thing is that there’s a light lavender scent in the air as you walk around, which makes the whole place feel calm and relaxing. It’s definitely a core memory for me.

5. What else is there besides the lavender?

If you’re not too keen on walking around the fields, as mentioned above, there are light snacks available— but don’t expect full meals. You might want to have lunch somewhere else, perhaps High Country Salmon.

There are also bikes available if you want to explore more of the area, since the property itself is quite spacious.

After walking through the lavender rows and taking photos, you can sit down and enjoy some ice cream. We tried the honeycomb lavender flavor, and it was really good.

If you’re after that purple aesthetic to match the fields, the blueberry flavor will give you that pretty purple color.

We also tried their lavender hot cocoa, and it was so good too!

Before leaving, you can browse the souvenir shop for lavender oils, soaps, honey, and small gifts to purchase.

6. How long do you need here?

You probably don’t need a lot of time. Depending on your preference, around 30–60 minutes is usually enough to walk around, take photos, grab ice cream, and browse the shop.

I think it works best as a quick stop between Lake Tekapo and Mt Cook rather than a place to spend half a day.

7. Overall verdict: is it worth stopping by?

I always love lavender, so 100% yes! 💖

But tbh I trulyyy think that it’s a really nice place to spend some time relaxing and inhaling lavender scent, especially if you’re already passing through the area.

It’s not a big attraction that you’d plan an entire day around, but it’s easy to access & it’s a nice little pause in the middle of a roadtrip

If you’re visiting Lake Tekapo or even Mount Cook in summer, adding this stop definitely makes the road trip feel more complete.

And if you like slow travel moments, this is one of those places where you can just walk around, take a few photos, and enjoy a quiet break before continuing the drive.
