Healing in Bali: Melukat Ritual (Ubud, Bali)

| Time to Read :

4โ€“7 minutes

I live and work in the busy city of Jakarta, where everything seems to be moving so fast yet I can’t help but feeling empty inside. I wanted to find some serenity & a deeper meaning into life. And since I’ve also been interested in spirituality, I, along with a friend, then decided to embark on a โœจhealing tripโœจ to Ubud.

We found a half-day Healing Retreat held by Pasraman Bali Eling Spirit. I’m so glad we decided to do this retreat with them, because despite the short duration (8:00 – 14:00ish), I felt much lighter and serene.

As this experience has allowed me to get to know myself deeper, teaching me about acceptance & letting go, and allowing myself to feel rejuvenated inside out; I wanted to share some more details about what this Healing Retreat program entails:

1. Meditation

We began the retreat with a meditation. I don’t remember how long this was, but definitely more than 30 minutes. I’ve never done a guided meditation (or even self meditation) before, so this was a good intro to meditation for me.

I felt love and lightness, I felt the ability to love myself deeper. When we ended the meditation, I felt very light, recharged, and ready to restart my journey with a different, more positive energy.

2. Yoga

Now that we’ve satisfied the needs of the inner self, it’s the time to do some light physical activity to balance it out ๐Ÿ˜€ With yoga, we were asked to draw mindfulness to each pose & to listen to our bodies.

This was a beginner friendly yoga– it was also my friend’s first time to try out yoga, and she found it be okay! After that, breakfast was served: smoothie bowl and assorted slices of fruits- yum!

3. Sound Healing

This was another new experience for me. We have 7 chakras, which are the “energy wheels / points” in our body. Sometimes they can be unbalanced– they can either be too big or small. Sound healing generates the frequency to balance out our chakras. We were asked to lay down & relax– it’s okay to fall asleep (I did ๐Ÿ˜€) as the sound waves will still penetrate into our minds.

4. Melukat

We were then brought to Pura Mengening (about 20 min drive from the Pasraman) to do Melukat. Pura Mengening is located in a close distance to the more tourist-populated Pura Tirta Empul. Similar to the name, Mengening, which is also called “Menghening” in Indonesian (meaning: to be quiet); the Pura is quiet and peaceful. Our guide told us that this Pura was used by King Udayana, one of the previous kings in Bali, when he wanted to find a peaceful place, away from the crowd.

There are several springs at Pura Mengening that people can use with different purposes. For example, to wash their sacred “keris” (a traditional sword-like weapon), for beauty, for charisma, and more. As for us, we went to the one purposed for Melukat, which was Tirtha Telaga Waja.

Tirtha Telaga Waja- as seen on above photo, is very beautiful and serene. The surrounding ambience was so peaceful, sacred, and lush. Before we entered the spring, there’s a nearby gazebo where we had to pray according to our own beliefs– to ask for permission to enter the sacred spring.

It was around 13:30, the weather was pretty sunny, but the water was c o l d โ„๏ธ. I was actually shivering while our guide demonstrated how to perform the ritual.

I then went to the waterfall, washed my face several times in outward directions and drank some of the water. The idea is to get rid of the negative energy within me & stuffs that I’d like to release, and take in the new positive energy.

The current from the waterfall was a bit strong and it was a little bit difficult to get closer, but after I managed to put my hands to the stone wall behind the water curtain, it was then easier to stay put. As the water splashed towards me, I didn’t shiver anymore. It was thoroughly refreshing and I just felt rejuvenated.

There were also a few fountains next to the waterfall, where we also performed the same washing ritual here.

And that concludes my first Melukat experience! After that, we were supposed to go back to the Pasraman for lunch, but we had another appointment and need to leave early, however they were kind enough to provide us with dinner instead ๐ŸคŽ

More on Pasraman Bali Eling Spirit

Pasraman Bali Eling Spirit was amazing. Starting with meditation in the morning and ending the retreat with Melukat, the program feels like a complete set. They also guided us with so much care & attention, answering all our questions with patience and no judgment.

In this Healing Retreat, meals (vegetarian) were provided 2 times: breakfast and lunch. They were delicious and filling!

When you’re in Bali and looking to spend some time to ๐Ÿƒheal๐Ÿƒ, I definitely recommend Pasraman Bali Eling Spirit. They also have other types of retreats listed on their website. I hope to return one day and participate in their longer classes.

FYI this post is not sponsored by anyone, I’m sharing this purely because this was a beautiful experience for me.

Accommodation

Accommodation is not included in this retreat. We therefore opted for an accommodation halfway between Ubud centre and the Pasraman, it’s called Green Padma Ubud. I loved the location as it’s not as crowded as in the Ubud centre, yet conveniently located to our destinations.

Anything Else to Note?

You’ll definitely get soaking wet after performing Melukat, so make sure to bring a towel and new change of clothes. I didn’t think very much ahead and brought a high-slit sundress as my change, so I was asked to wear a Sarong / Kain Bali as a cover– thank goodness I brought a spare Sarong ๐Ÿ™ˆ. After all, it is a sacred place so definitely make sure to dress appropriately.

Hopefully this could provide you with a good overview about Melukat and maybe an idea if you’re looking for a different kind of trip to Bali.
