Ever wondered how a page could be found on Google? At first, I thought everything I posted online would just 💫automatically💫 show up on search engines like Google. I thought it was just a matter of ranking—where less popular posts would appear on the last tabs of search results, while the popular ones would be visible on the first page.

But actually, your page won’t just appear on Google Search right away after it’s been published to the internet.

So what should we do? Enter 🌟 Google Search Console 🌟 where you can register your website so Google can crawl and then index your website. Here I’m gonna share the simple steps to do it in my noob wording.

💅 By being able to crawl , it means that Google is able to access your site. How can Google show your site to everyone else if they don’t know that your site exists?

💅 What about indexing? Once Google became aware of your website, they can index it, which is another fancy word for putting your site into their list; so that when someone searches for your site, Google will look into their list, pull out your site from the list, and then show it on the search result.

💡 Hint: you can search whether your site has been crawled / indexed by Google by typing in “site:yoursiteurl” (e.g. site:curated-journal.com) on Google 💡

So here’s how I used Google Search Console for my blog:

1. Go to Google Search Console

2. Sign in to your Google account

3. Type in your domain (e.g. for me, I entered curated-journal.com) – below photo. I chose Domain instead of URL prefix because I’d like them to crawl all URLs on my page

4. Google will verify if you’re indeed the owner of the domain. For me, I went to WordPress to verify it

5. Once you’re logged in to Google Search Console, you can enter your sitemap. Below is what I entered, the ending of the URL has “sitemap.xml”

6. Once the sitemap has been entered, you’ll be able to see which pages on your website have been crawled / indexed by Google. They will also provide a reasoning on why a page is not indexed.

So that’s how I use Google Search Console to make sure that what I’ve posted online is listed on Google, increasing the chance of someone to view and visit my page.
