Hakodate, is a peaceful seaside city in Hokkaido, Japan. It is a culinary paradise with fresh seafood and fruits. I absolutely love Hakodate and would love to come back one day.
Check my Hokkaido Vlog to see my food adventure in Hakodate here ๐
Anyways! These are the food that made my visit to Hakodate unforgettable (disclaimer: #1-5 can be found in Hakodate Morning Market):
- 1. Uni Murakami, Hakodate Morning Market
- 2. King Crab, Hakodate Morning Market
- 3. Oyster, Hakodate Morning Market
- 4. Melon, Hakodate Morning Market
- 5. Strawberry, Hakodate Morning Market
- 6. Kantaro Sushi
- 7. Pastry Snaffle’s
1. Uni Murakami, Hakodate Morning Market

The freshest uni I’ve ever had in my life was here. Before this, I haven’t really understood the hype about uni, because the ones I had before had that fishy odour.
But this one from Uni Murakami is different! It’s sooo sweet and creamy. I had to try a bunch of their menu, and even get another serving of fresh plain uni at the end. Highly recommend Uni Murakami when you’re in Hakodate.
2. King Crab, Hakodate Morning Market
Hakodate king crab was humongous. We wanted to order steamed ones, however, the stall owner recommended us to get the grilled ones.
We’re glad we listened to them because the crab turned out to be SOOO good. It was sweet, tender, and I just couldn’t get enough of it.
Until now, I’m not sure what the name of the store was, but I took a photo of it below.

3. Oyster, Hakodate Morning Market

Still at the same store, we also ordered their giant oyster sashimi. It was so fresh and delicious. Reminds me of the one in Tasmania, but bigger.
Taste and size wise though, I think I still prefer the one on Bruny Island, Tasmania.
4. Melon, Hakodate Morning Market

The sweetest melon I had is always from Japan. I wanted to try Hokkaido Yubari melon, but they weren’t in season yet when I came in March. The weather was still too cold. You can come in the warmer months like June onwards for Yubari melon.
There’s still melon in the morning market though! And they’re still sweet. However, they’re originated from the already warmer, southern part of Japan, Miyazaki prefecture.
5. Strawberry, Hakodate Morning Market

The heaven for fruit and seafood is here in Hakodate. I bought 2 packs of these strawberries. They’re large and sweet.
6. Kantaro Sushi

I knew I have to visit this place when I saw those whopping 2k reviews on Google, and it did not disappoint!!! The freshest and yummiest sushi I’ve had so far to this day. Highly recommend.
I tried a crab leg sushi for the first time here and I….. did not like it hahaha although they put a lot of wasabi already. I was not a fan of the texture. The chef was so attentive though! He asked me if I wanted more wasabi, to which I said yes pleaseee ๐ฅฒ
All that we ordered were excellent (not counting the crab because it’s just my preference lol). Highly recommend the otoro, salmon, and shrimp tempura (my mom’s favorite!).
7. Pastry Snaffle’s

Such great food to eat when in Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. This cheesecake is very soft and dense, not too sweet, perfect to pair it with a cup of black coffee.

I did not have the time to try the famous Hakodate ramen, but that’s on my list when I’m back to Hakodate.
